Background
KSpot Wi-Fi Services is a small but growing wireless hotspot provider in The Gambia, operating several public internet access points in the Greater Banjul Area. These hotspots serve high-traffic locations such as cafes, community centers, and public parks. The business depends heavily on stable and fast wireless internet to retain customers and maintain service quality.
However, BanjulLink faced persistent network disruptions, including:
- Intermittent client disconnections
- Slow internet speeds during peak hours
- Frequent downtime at random locations
- No centralized management or monitoring system
KonnectFi's Intervention
KonnectFi was contracted to audit, troubleshoot, and stabilize BanjulLink's infrastructure. Our approach was structured into three phases:
Phase 1: Network Assessment and Root Cause Analysis
- Conducted on-site surveys at all 8 hotspot locations.
- Identified hardware inconsistencies (mix of unmanaged routers, consumer-grade access points).
- Detected frequent channel overlaps and IP conflicts.
- Found lack of centralized authentication.
- Measured signal strength, packet loss, and bandwidth utilization at each site.
Key Issues Identified:
- Congested 2.4GHz spectrum due to poor channel planning
- No VLAN separation between management and client traffic
- Frequent DHCP IP exhaustion
- Insufficient backhaul bandwidth at 3 locations
Phase 2: Network Redesign and Equipment Upgrade
- Hardware Standardization: Replaced legacy devices with Ubiquiti UniFi APs and routers.
- Centralized Management: Installed UniFi Controller Cloud Key.
- Bandwidth Optimization: Configured bandwidth limits and QoS.
- VLAN Segmentation: Segregated guest, management, and staff traffic.
- Spectrum Management: Redesigned Wi-Fi channel plans.
- Backhaul Upgrade: Upgraded internet links at bottleneck locations.
Phase 3: Monitoring and Support
- Deployed Uptime Kuma and UniFi alerts for 24/7 monitoring.
